Sejarah dan Proses Pembuatan Kiswah (Kain Penutup Ka’bah)

Pada ka’bah kita sering melihat adanya Kiswah (kain/selimut hitam penutup ka’bah). Tujuan dari pemasangan kain itu adalah untuk melindungi dinding ka’bah dari kotoran, debu, serta panas yang dapat membuatnya menjadi rusak. Selain itu kiswah juga berfungsi sebagai hiasan ka’bah.
Menurut sejarah, Kabah sudah diberi kiswah sejak zaman Nabi Ismail AS, putra Nabi Ibrahim AS. Namun tidak ada catatan yang mengisahkan kiswah pada zaman Nabi Ismail terbuat dari apa dan berwarna apa. Baru pada masa kepemimpinan Raja Himyar Asad Abu Bakr dari Yaman, disebutkan kiswah yang melindungi Ka’bah terbuat dari kain tenun.

Kebijakan Raja Himyar untuk memasang kiswah sesuai tradisi Arab yang berkembang sejak zaman Ismail as diikuti oleh para penerusnya. Pada masa Qusay ibnu Kilab, salah seorang leluhur Nabi Muhammad yang terkemuka, pemasangan kiswah pada Kabah menjadi tanggung jawab masyarakat Arab dari suku Quraisy.
Nabi Muhammad SAW sendiri juga pernah memerintahkan pembuatan kiswah dari kain yang berasal dari Yaman. Sedangkan empat khalifah penerus Nabi Muhammad yang termasuk dalam Khulafa al-Rasyidin memerintahkan pembuatan kiswah dari kain benang kapas.
Sementara itu, pada era Kekhalifahan Abbassiyah, Khalifah ke-4 al-Mahdi memerintahkan supaya kiswah dibuat dari kain sutra Khuz. Pada masa pemerintahannya, kiswah didatangkan dari Mesir dan Yaman.
Menurut catatan sejarah, kiswah tidak selalu berwarna hitam pekat seperti saat ini. Kiswah pertama yang dibuat dari kain tenun dari Yaman justru berwarna merah dan berlajur-lajur. Sedangkan pada masa Khalifah Mamun ar-Rasyid, kiswah dibuat dengan warna dasar putih. Kiswah juga pernah dibuat berwarna hijau atas perintah Khalifah An-Nasir dari Bani Abbasiyah (sekitar abad 16 M) dan kiswah juga pernah dibuat berwarna kuning berdasarkan perintah Muhammad ibnu Sabaktakin.
Penggantian kiswah yang berwarna-warni dari tahun ke tahun, rupanya mengusik benak Kalifah al-Mamun dari Dinasti Abbasiyah, hingga akhirnya diputuskan bahwa sebaiknya warna kiswah itu tetap dari waktu ke waktu yaitu hitam. Hingga saat ini, meskipun kiswah diganti setiap tahun, tetapi warnanya selalu hitam.
